Historic Port Deposit Churches

   Churches in Port Deposit have an illustrious and rich history. In present day Historic Port there are five active Churches, there has been as many as seven active at one time. This is amazing considering the physical size of the town. Port Deposit is basically several hundred yards wide at is greatest and approximately 9/10 of a mile long.

Many of the current day meeting places in Port Deposit were churches. A few examples:

Nesbitt  Hall was originally built as  Presbyterian church in the early 1800's.

20 North Main Street, the Susquehanna Bank and Bridge Company Building which current day Jefferson Hall was a Catholic Church around 1850.

The Paw Paw Museum was originally a Presbyterian Church.

During the War of 1812, a Battery of God Fearing men set up a post in case the British crossed the Susquehanna River from Havre de Grace and Lapidum. These early American Soldiers gathered at the local Presbyterian Church. The local story of the Silver Cross is woven too into this lure.
