GEORGE MCMULLEN
 Third Base Stand Out

On The
 Port Deposit Black Sox

By Historian Fred Kelso, Oxford PA
 as provided by Erika Quesenbery
Curator Paw Paw Museum Port Deposit, MD

In 1931 George McMullen strode to third base for the Port Deposit Black Sox. The field was at the wharf along the river, where a condominium development now stands. McMullen had to scramble at his position, since left-handed batters would often send the ball soaring right into the Susquehanna River. McMullen’s brothers Wallace Brooks and James McMullen also played for the sox, Wallace was an outfielder and James on second base – even though he was left-handed and would eventually be moved to first base.
