Jacob Tome was born August 13 1810 in Hanover York County
Pennsylvania Died on March 16th 1898 in Port Deposit Cecil
County Maryland. He was an American philanthropist, a
patriot and founder of the Tome School..He took sick on March
13 1898 and died a few days later March 16th of pneumonia at
aged 87.
Jacob Tome arrived in Port Deposit a penniless man and left this
world one as one of the richest men in the United States He was Cecil County's first millionaire and
it's
greatest Philanthropist. His benevolence lives today in many institutions,
Colleges churches and schools of learning.

His widow Evalyn Nesbitt Tome was the richest woman in the
State, later married Joseph Irwin France. Tome was born in York County, Pa.,
August 13, 1810. He was a Republican and a Member of Maryland state senate in
1864; was a candidate for Governor of Maryland, 1871. Died March 16, 1898.
Buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Port Deposit, Md.
