Rachel remembers Black Sox games at Canal Field, where hot
dogs could be bought for 25 cents.
Rachel’s father was Bobby Jones; he played for the Black Sox. Her mother is
Addie Elizabeth (Griffin) Jones; she is James Griffin’s sister.
Rachel’s house is currently owned by James and Alethis Griffin. At one time it
was owned by the owners of Hershey park.
Billy Cain used to have a meat store in Port Deposit.
Dr. Ball was the local dentist.
The Port movies were run by Audrey Abraham’s father.
Alexander Griffin and his sons, in addition to working in the quarry, were
fishermen who sold fish in town. They were kind and helpful to the people of
the community.
Rachel remembers one day when Ben Griffin put on a terrible blast that shook the
whole community.
Alexander Griffin was a very religious man who went to church three times on
Sunday and attended Friday night church classes. The whole family said prayers
around the breakfast table.
Freeman Hall was the first school which Rachel attended. She recalled her part
in one particular recitation of the alphabet: “H is for Happy and happy are we -
Christmas is coming, the children all agree.”
Rachel’s Aunt Nellie Griffin and Lena Cornish were midwives for the community.
There was a water pump across the street from Rachel’s house when she was
growing up.
Rachel had 7 brothers and 7 sisters.
Mr. Brooks was the bat man for the Black Sox; he lived in Port Deposit.
There was a slaughterhouse at Rock Run Mill.
There were three PRR stations - the Bank (or Middle) Station, Canal Station, and
Rock Run Station.
