Note 1: From the Last Will & Testament of Cornelius Smith, dated 3/28/1857, "...I also give and bequeath to my niece, Philena Reynolds...my black boy, Henry Dunmore, until he is twenty-eight years of age, he being twenty-one last August, and at that time I give him his freedom forever..."
Note 2: In the 1860 Census of the 7th District, Thomas Patton, farmer, aged 87, has 4 black people living in his household - Martha Peaco (60), Sarah Peaco (30), Hannah Collins (15), and Charles Williams (14)

Note 3: In the 1860 Census, Allen Anderson is 70 (he had been a merchant), Joseph Couden is 37 & a merchant, Henry Chamberlin is 73 & a farmer, Haselet Owens is 59 & a sailor, Jefferson Ramsey is 50 & a farmer, John Stump is 52 & a farmer, Cornelius Smith  Sr. is dead but he has a son Cornelius, Jacob Tome is 50 & a banker, James Way is 69 & a plasterer, Norman Nowland is 37 & a carpenter, John Starratt is 70 & a farmer
Note 4: Marian Touchstone related that her gg grandfather Hazlett Owens gave his slave Mary as a wedding gift to his daughter Virginia and her husband James Touchstone. Mary married John Lowe, and often came back to stay with the Touchstones after Emancipation.
