Where were boats made for WW I ? I understand my
grandfather helped build them to fulfill his military obligation. I thought it
was at Port Deposit. Could you inform me about that? And what were the boats
called? All I know they were boats or ships used in WW I. I'm not sure if
they were called "Liberty Boats or Ships". He stayed weeks at a time to build
them and at one point returned home to the farm because of the flu. Thanks for
any help,

Boats were made in Port Deposit by Wiley Manufacturing Company. During the
World War I period, however, I believe Wiley's most extensive operations
were outside of Port Deposit. Wiley's manufactured a great number of
cranes and other large items such as floating derricks during the period
between both wars and during WWII as well. One of their most famous lines
was the Wiley "Whirley" Gig, a massive crane used on the Panama Canal and
other areas.
