The Past is in our Future

There have been hundreds of thousand of people over the centuries who have passed through or called Port Deposit home. Their efforts whether simple or through commerce, working the river, banking, building, educating or raising families are the fabric of our heritage; the colorful history we constantly uncover.

There have been a few however, whom over the centuries, through tireless dedication have preserved insights of our history for future generation to see and enjoy. It for these selfless souls who had the vision of the Future that we dedicate this section of our Past and however belated say thank you from the Present.

If you notice part of our heritage that appears to be missing or needs correction do not hesitate to contact us. These stories are ever evolving. We also request that if you have a picture or a story that needs to be told (however simple) please share it with us. It is surprising that things that seem ordinary to some are extra-ordinary to others especially if ones home, family or part of life crossed our path at some point.

    =GUYAS CUTAS=
      transcribed By Fred Kelso

The Letters to the Editor of the Cecil Whig

"Guyas Cutas"  Was a pseudonym for a writer to the Cecil Whig in 1876 as quick as he came he disappeared but left us a window to Port Deposit Golden Era of it's growth. No one knows who just who he... or she was....

....And just who was Guyas Cutas?
Kelso's gut feeling is that "Guyas Cutas" was Col. Edwin Wilmer, who was born in Smyrna, DE, owned a variety of businesses in Port and at one point owned Holly Hall in Elkton.
